Bajamar & Punta del Hidalgo

WHERE REAL TINERFEÑOS GO SWIMMING. Coastal village of La Laguna with the best-equipped natural pools in the north: 2 large + 1 children's pool + sheltered golden sand beach. Blue Flag. Lifeguards, facilities, full accessibility. FREE. Fresh fish restaurants poolside. 100% local family atmosphere - grandparents strolling, kids in the wading pool, families eating by the sea. Not a tourist spot - the LOCALS' hangout. Promenade to Punta del Hidalgo. Combinable with La Laguna (15 min) and Anaga.

If you want to see how Tinerfeños truly unwind, Bajamar is your place. This coastal village in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, just 10 km from the UNESCO historic centre, is where the laguneros head after work, where families spend weekends, and where retirees walk the promenade and swim in the pools every morning.

THE NATURAL POOLS - THE BEST-EQUIPPED IN THE NORTH: Three saltwater pools fed by the sea: two large ones for swimming (spectacular when the waves crash against the outer breakwater) and a small wading pool, perfectly safe for children. The water refreshes with the tides. The facilities are first-rate: lifeguards in season, changing rooms with showers and toilets, accessibility ramps for people with reduced mobility, spacious sun terraces. European Blue Flag for water quality and services. All FREE.

THE BEACH: Next to the pools there's a small golden sand beach, sheltered from strong waves. Ideal for families with young children. There are also natural intertidal rock pools where at low tide you can spot crabs, limpets and small fish.

GASTRONOMY - GENUINELY FRESH FISH: Bajamar has a food scene that surprises for such a small village. The Cofradía de Bajamar, right beside the pools, serves the catch of the day with ocean views - grilled vieja, garlic prawns, calamari, papas arrugadas with mojo. Menu del día from €10 at the bars across the road. Restaurante Los Tarajales: quality Canarian cuisine on a terrace. Café Melita: perched on the cliff edge, a special discovery. Baja Surf Cafe: modern vibe, brunch. And all at local prices, not tourist prices.

LOCAL ATMOSPHERE: This is what makes Bajamar special. There are no resorts, no souvenir shops, no tourist entertainment. There are neighbours who know each other, grandparents strolling at sunset, kids playing in the wading pool, fishermen on the rocks. In summer it fills with La Laguna families - if you're after tranquillity, come in October-November when the weather is still perfect but there are far fewer people.

SEAFRONT PROMENADE: The coastal walk connects Bajamar with Punta del Hidalgo (about 3 km). Ideal for walking at sunset with views of the Atlantic and the Anaga mountains. From the promenade you can see the silhouette of Punta del Hidalgo with its futuristic lighthouse.

PERFECT COMBINATIONS: Bajamar + La Laguna (UNESCO heritage, 15 min by car) + Punta del Hidalgo (lava rock pools, lighthouse) = a perfect half day in the northeast. Or as a refreshing stop after a hike through Anaga.

Insider tip

TIPS:

1. THIS ISN'T TOURISTY - IT'S BETTER: Bajamar doesn't appear in typical tourist guides. There are no resorts or souvenir shops here. This is where real Tinerfeños go to swim, eat fish and spend the afternoon. If you want to see the island's authentic daily life, this is your spot.

2. PAY ATTENTION TO THE TIDES: At low tide, the children's wading pool is calmer and the intertidal rock pools reveal crabs and limpets - perfect for kids. At high tide, the big pools refresh with fresh water and the waves crashing against the breakwater are SPECTACULAR (bring your camera). Check tide tables beforehand.

3. EAT AT THE COFRADÍA: The Cofradía de Bajamar is the classic - fresh catch of the day, ocean views. But if you want to spend less, cross the road: menu del día with a drink from ~€10 at the village bars. Quality is excellent at both.

4. SUNSET FROM THE PROMENADE: Between September and November, the sunsets from Bajamar's seafront promenade are among the best in Tenerife. The sky turns red while the lighthouse glows and the Anaga mountains darken. Free and magical.

5. COMBINE WITH PUNTA DEL HIDALGO: Just 3 km along the road (or walking along the coastal promenade), Punta del Hidalgo offers wilder lava rock pools and a futuristic lighthouse. Perfect plan: morning in Bajamar (pools + lunch) → afternoon in Punta del Hidalgo (rock pools + lighthouse + sunset).

6. COMBINE WITH LA LAGUNA: The historic centre of La Laguna (UNESCO World Heritage) is just 15 minutes away. Ideal plan: morning visiting La Laguna → midday/afternoon in Bajamar swimming and eating fish.

7. POST-ANAGA STOP: If you've been hiking in Anaga (laurel forest, viewpoints), Bajamar is the perfect stop to cool off and eat before heading back. The TF-13 connects directly.

8. WATER SHOES: For the intertidal rock pools and volcanic rocks, bring aqua shoes or reef walkers. The rocks can be slippery.

9. RED FLAG = NO SWIMMING: Although the pools are protected, they close for bathing in very rough seas. Always check the flag colour. If it's red, enjoy the spectacle of the waves from outside - equally impressive.

History

Bajamar belongs to the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This small coastal village in northeast Tenerife has historically been the summer retreat and relaxation spot for laguneros (inhabitants of La Laguna). Its volcanic rock coastline has been shaped by centuries of Atlantic swell, creating the rock pools and natural swimming pools that are its hallmark today. The pools were renovated and upgraded in recent years, earning the European Blue Flag. Nearby, the Barranco de Vargas harbours one of the last native thermophilous palm groves on the island. The slopes climbing towards Anaga Rural Park show the transition from arid coast to cloud forest and laurisilva. Bajamar celebrates its Fiestas del Gran Poder with folklore, gastronomy and local traditions.
