Teide National Park

SPAIN'S HIGHEST PEAK (3,715 m) and UNESCO World Heritage Site. 18,990 hectares of lunar volcanic landscape. Cable car to 3,555 m (La Rambleta) - MANDATORY online booking. Summit trail with permit and 15€ eco-tax (sells out weeks ahead). Roques de García and Roque Cinchado. Starlight Destination. From the south: TF-21 via Vilaflor (~1h) or TF-38 via Chío (~1h). CAN COMBINE WITH MASCA in one epic day. PARK ENTRY FREE (cable car and summit trail separate).

Teide National Park is, without question, the most impressive experience in Tenerife and one of the great natural wonders of Europe. Teide volcano, at 3,715 metres above sea level (and 7,500 metres from the ocean floor), is Spain's highest peak, the Atlantic's highest point, and the world's 3rd tallest volcano measured from its base. Declared a National Park in 1954 (the oldest and largest in the Canaries) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

The park covers 18,990 hectares of volcanic landscape that looks like another planet - literally, NASA and ESA have used this area to simulate Mars conditions. The colossal Las Cañadas caldera, 45 km in perimeter, contains lava flows from different eruptions, volcanic cones, impossible rock formations, and unique endemic flora.

The last eruption inside the park was in 1798 (Narices del Teide / Pico Viejo); the last on Tenerife was in 1909 (Chinyero volcano, outside the park). Teide is dormant - the crater fumaroles reach 100°C. Fun fact: when Columbus set sail from La Gomera in 1492, Teide was in full eruption.

UNIQUE ENDEMIC FLORA: Red Teide tajinaste (Echium wildpretii) - spectacular red flower tower up to 3 m tall, blooms May-June, ONLY exists here. Teide violet (above 2,500 m, Spain's highest-altitude flowering plant). Teide broom (fragrant white flowers). Teide daisy.

Teide is a Starlight Destination (certified since 2014) - one of the best skies in the world for stargazing.

GUANCHE LEGEND: For the Guanches, Teide was 'Echeyde' - dwelling of the demon Guayota. According to legend, Guayota kidnapped the sun god (Magec) and imprisoned him inside the volcano, plunging the island into darkness. The Guanches called upon Achamán (supreme god), who defeated Guayota and sealed the crater, freeing the sun.

IMPACT FACTS: Most visited national park in Spain and Europe. In 2017, the 8th most searched place on Google Street View worldwide. Rambo V was partially filmed here.

Insider tip

INSIDER TIPS:

1. TF-38 vs TF-21: If staying in the south, the TF-38 (via Chio) is more comfortable with fewer curves. The TF-21 (via Vilaflor) is more beautiful but winding. TIP: go up one, come down the other - you see everything.

2. TEIDE + MASCA COMBO (EPIC DAY): From the south you can do both in one day. ROUTE: Costa Adeje - TF-21 via Vilaflor - Teide (cable car + viewpoints) - exit via TF-38 - TF-82 to Santiago del Teide - TF-436 to MASCA - return via TF-1. Full day (~8h). Doable if you leave at 8:00-9:00.

3. RED TAJINASTES (MAY-JUNE): Red flower towers up to 3 metres tall. They only exist here. A sight unique in the world.

4. VILAFLOR: If driving up the TF-21, stop in Vilaflor - Spain's highest village (1,380 m). From here a trail leads to the Lunar Landscape. Pino Gordo: a Canary pine over 45 metres tall.

5. FILL UP BEFORE YOU GO: No petrol stations inside the park or in nearby mountain areas. Tank up BEFORE heading up.

6. SUNSET AND STARS: Teide is a Starlight Destination - one of the best skies in the world. Dawn and sunset offer spectacular light for photographers. Volcano Teide organises Sunset & Stars experiences.

History

Teide (Echeyde in Guanche - 'dwelling of the Evil One') is a stratovolcano rising to 3,715 metres. Measured from the ocean floor, its 7,500 metres makes it the world's 3rd tallest volcano. For the Guanches it held a sacred and mythic significance: they believed that Guayota, the evil spirit, dwelled within. According to legend, Guayota kidnapped the sun god Magec and imprisoned him inside the volcano, plunging the world into darkness. The god Achamán defeated Guayota and sealed the crater. The Guanches used the cañadas for summer grazing, and numerous archaeological sites have been found. The Las Cañadas caldera (45 km perimeter) formed from the collapse of an ancient volcanic structure. The Teide-Pico Viejo system rose upon these ruins. The last eruption inside the park was in 1798 (Narices del Teide, 12 million m³ of lava over 3 months). The last eruption on Tenerife was in 1909 (Chinyero volcano, outside the park). Fun fact: when Columbus set sail from La Gomera in 1492, Teide was in eruption. National Park since 1954 (3rd oldest in Spain). UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. Starlight Destination since 2014. Council of Europe Diploma (1989, renewed). Roque Cinchado appeared on the 1000 pesetas banknote. The park shares geological characteristics with Mars - NASA/ESA conduct studies here.
