El Médano

Surfer village on south coast, windsurfing/kite capital of Tenerife. 3 km natural sandy beaches, 300 days of trade winds per year. PWA World Cup venue. Montaña Roja nature reserve next door. Cosmopolitan vibe, Saturday market, promenade with kite views. FREE.

El Médano is the windsurf and kiteboard capital of Tenerife - a former fishing village on the south coast that has been reborn as a cosmopolitan surf hub while keeping its pueblo soul. The name means 'sand dune' - and sand is what you get: over 3 km of natural beaches stretching from Playa Chica to Playa de La Tejita, with Montaña Roja (171 m volcanic cone, Special Nature Reserve) as a dramatic backdrop. Constant trade winds (300+ days/year) make it a world-class spot for windsurf, kitesurf, wingfoil, and SUP - the annual PWA Windsurf Grand Slam attracts ~140 riders from 20 countries to El Cabezo beach. Three distinct surf spots offer something for every level: the Bay (flat water/swell), Harbour Wall (side-shore wave), and Cabezo (onshore wave for pros). Beyond the water, El Médano has genuine village charm - Plaza El Médano is ringed by cafés and trees, a Saturday farmers' market fills the streets, and festivals like Sansofé (July/August) and Noche de San Juan bring locals together. About 41% of residents are international (Italian, German, British), giving it a uniquely cosmopolitan, 'buen rollo' atmosphere. The giant 'EL MÉDANO' letters on the promenade are the obligatory selfie spot. First hotel on the south coast (Hotel Médano, 1963) was built here, before the tourist boom moved west to Los Cristianos and Las Américas.

Insider tip

1) WIND: it's always windy - don't bring a hat that can blow off. Embrace it or hide in Playa Chica (sheltered cove). 2) FOOD: Saturday morning farmers' market for local cheese, mojo, fruit. For dinner, Restaurante Naife (French-Med, Google 4.9) is the best-kept secret - tiny, book ahead. 3) TIMING: morning = calm, great for swimming; afternoon = kites fill the sky, best for photos from the promenade. 4) SELFIE: giant 'EL MÉDANO' letters on the seafront - can't miss them. 5) COMBO: climb Montaña Roja at sunset → descend to La Tejita → walk the promenade to El Médano for dinner.

History

In the 19th century, a modest fishing village arose on the coast known as Costa de Magallanes. The name 'El Médano' comes from the surrounding sand dunes (médano = sand dune). The village gained identity in 1899 with the construction of a hermitage, and a road from Granadilla opened in 1907. The first hotel on south Tenerife - Hotel Médano - opened in October 1963, pioneering the shift 'from tomatoes to tourism'. The 1970s brought the southern motorway (1971) and Reina Sofía airport (1978), triggering a tourist boom. In the 1980s, the international windsurfing scene discovered El Médano's perfect winds, establishing it as a world-class watersports destination.
