Puerto de la Cruz's grand balcony: from here you see Martianez Beach, Cesar Manrique's lake complex, the Atlantic, and on clear days the island of La Palma. Two viewpoint levels, Agatha Christie-themed stairs down to the center, and access to the coastal path toward Playa El Bollullo. Come at sunset.
Mirador de La Paz is Puerto de la Cruz's grand balcony. Set in the residential La Paz neighborhood atop the Martiánez cliffs, it offers the city's finest panorama: black volcanic Playa Martiánez in the foreground, César Manrique's Lago Martiánez pool complex beyond, the Orotava Valley and the endless Atlantic. On clear days, you can make out La Palma's silhouette on the horizon. The viewpoint has two levels connected by stairs - the upper one has the best views. On the square you'll find a bust of Agatha Christie, who visited Puerto de la Cruz in February 1927 while staying at the Hotel Taoro. Gazing at these very cliffs, she found inspiration for 'The Man from the Sea' in her collection 'The Mysterious Mr Quin'. You'll also spot the quirky Monument to the Tourist. Directly opposite stands the Ermita de San Amaro (1591), Puerto de la Cruz's oldest religious building, with 18th-century Mexican paintings inside. From the viewpoint, the Coastal Trail leads to the beaches of El Bollullo, Los Patos, and El Ancón.
La Paz residential area, east of Puerto de la Cruz. Easy street parking (quiet neighborhood).
From Puerto center, walk uphill ~15-20 min via Paseo de San Amaro stairs. Or taxi up and walk down (recommended).
Get here by busTake a taxi up and walk down - you get the views without the climb. Don't miss the Agatha Christie themed steps with quotes from her books (urban art). From the viewpoint, go down a few steps to the right to reach the cliff promenade where paragliders soar past. For adventure, follow the Coastal Trail to Playa El Bollullo - one of Tenerife's best beaches.
The La Paz neighborhood was little more than the San Amaro chapel and banana plantations until the 1980s, when an astrophysics congress (1985) put Puerto de la Cruz on the international map and triggered a hotel building boom. The Agatha Christie connection dates to 1927: the English writer, going through a difficult period (divorce, mother's death), found peace in Puerto de la Cruz. She stayed at the Grand Hotel Taoro and frequented the Sitio Litre gardens and these cliffs. The view inspired 'The Man from the Sea' in 'The Mysterious Mr Quin' (1930). Puerto de la Cruz was the first city in the world to name a street after Agatha Christie, and since 2007 holds an international festival in her honor.
