The heart of Puerto de la Cruz, where everyone ends up sooner or later. Century-old laurel trees shade terraces where locals share tapas and Canarian wine, kids play around the fountain, and the beach and fishing pier are just 2 minutes away. Free parking at Explanada del Muelle (1,600 spaces, 5 min walk).
If Puerto de la Cruz has a beating heart, it's Plaza del Charco. In 1634 the soldier Próspero Casola mentioned the 'Shrimp Puddle': when the sea raged, waves entered through the fishing port forming saltwater pools where neighbors raised fish and shrimp among stones. That's how the name was born - one locals never abandoned despite official name changes through Constitucional, Real, and even Generalísimo Franco. Today it's simply 'el Charco'. Under the shade of majestic Indian laurels brought from Cuba in 1852, a 19th-century fountain crowned with its iconic ñamera plant, terraces with tapas and local wines, children playing in the park, and that constant murmur of conversation that hasn't stopped for centuries. Two minutes away: Playa del Muelle and the fishing port with breakwaters where kids climb volcanic rocks and explore natural rock pools. Free parking at Explanada del Muelle (1,600 spaces, 5 min walk).

Navigate to parkingThe square is just the starting point. Walk 2 minutes down to the fishing port and Playa del Muelle - a black volcanic stone cove between rocks where natural pools form. The port breakwaters (falochrones) are a natural adventure playground for kids: they can climb the rocks, discover crabs and sea urchins in the pools, and watch fishing boats up close. It's a magical spot that beach-umbrella tourists never find. For food: skip the first terrace on the square (touristy). Walk 1-2 minutes to the side streets: Mesón Los Gemelos (meats and fish, huge portions), Bodega Julián (tapas and wine in a cave), or cross to La Ranilla for street art and Tasca Ihüey. And don't miss Puerto de la Cruz's Carnaval - the square is completely transformed.
In 1634 Próspero Casola first documented the 'Charco de los Camarones'. The sea entered through the subsoil creating saltwater pools where neighbors raised shrimp and fish. Officially a square since the 18th century. In 1821 a flood severely damaged the space, and the following year it was renamed Plaza Constitucional. In 1835 the first major renovation took place. In 1852 the legendary Indian laurels were planted, brought from Cuba - now centuries old, they provide the shade that makes this square an oasis. In 1880 the paths were paved and the fountain with water features was installed, crowned by the ñamera plant that has become the symbol of the square. In 1883 British writer Olivia Stone described a square full of banana trees, eucalyptus, and a fountain with golden carp. The name changed with the politics - Real, Generalísimo Franco - but locals always called it 'El Charco'. The legendary Bar Dinámico opened in 1956 as the gathering point for the city's intellectuals for decades.
Plaza del Charco (relax, tapas) → Fishing Port & Playa del Muelle (rock pools, breakwaters for kids) → La Ranilla walk (street art, 17 murals) → Ermita de San Telmo → or up to Mirador de La Paz for sunset.
The fountain with ñamera plant in the center. Best when afternoon sun filters through the laurels creating light rays. THE classic Puerto de la Cruz photo.
Walk down to the fishing port for sunset. Black volcanic stone breakwaters against the Atlantic with colorful boats are pure postcard. If there's heavy swell, the waves crashing against the falochrones are spectacular.
