Playa Amarilla

Volcanic beach at the foot of a Natural Monument - yellow rock terraces, crystal-clear water, snorkeling and a bar on the rocks with ocean views.

Playa Amarilla is completely unlike any other beach in south Tenerife. There's no sand - instead, volcanic cliffs form natural terraces and balconies where visitors spread their towels directly on the warm rock. The layers of yellow and black rock, sculpted by waves over centuries, create natural architecture that's almost impossible to believe.

The water here is an intense turquoise blue and extraordinarily clear. The rocky bottom provides perfect visibility for snorkeling - you'll see fish, sea urchins and abundant marine life. Sea access is via stairs installed in the rock. The water is deep from the very first step, so it's not ideal for small children or inexperienced swimmers.

Right next door, the Mana Nui beach bar serves beers, cocktails and fresh lemonade from €2. There's always a relaxed atmosphere, soft background music and people sunbathing on the rock platforms. It's the perfect spot for a summer afternoon.

Behind the beach rises Montaña Amarilla, the volcano that gives the place its name, declared a Natural Monument since 1994. A 10-15 minute climb (steep but short) takes you to the summit with spectacular panoramic views of the entire south coast. From the top you can see El Médano, Montaña Roja and on clear days even La Gomera.

Insider tip

Bring a mat or thick towel - you'll be lying on volcanic rock, not sand. Sea access is via stairs - the water is deep from the very first step, not suitable for small children. Climb Montaña Amarilla (10-15 min, steep) - the panoramic views of the south coast are spectacular. The Mana Nui beach bar serves beers and fresh lemonade from €2 - perfect for sunset. No lifeguard - check sea conditions before entering. Bring snorkel goggles - the crystal-clear water and rocky bottom offer abundant marine life. The natural rock terraces have limited capacity - in summer arrive early for a good spot.
